In order to notarize your documents, we will need one form of valid (unexpired) identification listed below.
- A valid ID card or driver’s license issued by the State of California.
- A valid United States passport.
- A valid passport from the applicant’s country of citizenship.
- A valid driver’s license issued by another U.S. state or by a Canadian or Mexican public agency authorized to issue driver’s licenses.
- A valid ID card issued by another U.S. state.
- A valid U.S. military ID card with a photograph, ID number, description and signature of the ID holder.
- A valid inmate ID card issued by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
- A valid employee ID card issued by an agency or office of the State of California.
- A valid employee identification card issued by an agency or office of the State of California, or an agency or office of a city, county, or city and county in California.
- An identification card issued by a valid federally recognized tribal government.*
Federally recognized tribes
*A federally recognized tribe is an American Indian or Alaska Native tribal entity that is recognized as having a government-to-government relationship with the United States, with the responsibilities, powers, limitations, and obligations attached to that designation, and is eligible for funding and services from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
For those without valid identification
* Note: For clients without a valid ID, a positive ID can be established by the oath of two credible witnesses who personally know the person signing the document, and can provide valid identification from the list above. Oaths of Two Credible Witnesses – The identity of the signer can be established by the oaths of two credible witnesses whom the notary public does not personally know. The notary public first must establish the identities of the two credible witnesses by the presentation of paper identification documents as listed above. Under oath, the credible witnesses must swear or affirm under penalty of perjury to each of the things sworn to or affirmed by a single credible witness, as set forth above. (Civil Code sections 1185(b)(2) and 1185(b)(1)(A)(i)-(v)) (We can also except an expired drivers license, and/or ID card, if it was “issued by the DMV” within the last five years)
